Berlin’s Newest Airport Prepares for Grand Opening. Again.

BERLIN — After 9 years of delays, Germany’s third-largest airport, in Berlin, is ready to open — simply as the worldwide coronavirus pandemic is vastly lowering air visitors.

“It has been a long, difficult road until the final approval from the building authorities,” stated Germany’s airports chief, Engelbert Lütke Daldrup.

But the Berlin Brandenburg Airport venture has been riddled by so many delays, some authorities officers sound a bit skeptical that the brand new opening date — Oct. 31, with massive airways to start service in November — will maintain agency.

The new airport, within the southeast of Berlin, will change a number of smaller airports that serve town. Planning started in 1996, with a gap initially envisioned for 2006. But with the start of building delayed, the primary tentative opening was scheduled for the autumn of 2011.

Since then, there have been solely extra delays. A succession of leaders of the venture have been changed amid authorized battles, expenses of corruption and about three billion euros in value overruns.

But the repeated delays have dented Berlin’s picture as Germany’s buzzing middle of commerce after reunification, whereas supplying materials for a technology of German comics and fodder for finger-pointing.

“The money is to blame,” stated Andreas Otto, a member of the Berlin City-State parliament, who labored on a public inquiry into the venture after one other grand opening in 2012 was canceled. “There wasn’t too little, there was too much.”

Mr. Otto, a member of the Green Party, stated that with the announcement that the venture had been permitted, he was “never more sure that the airport would open.”

Still, the remark suggests the persisting skepticism about promised opening dates, irrespective of how sure they seem.

When the grand opening in 2012 was canceled, airline tickets to and from the vacation spot had already been issued. A practice station, just under the terminal, was already absolutely practical and prepared for passengers.

With the delay, rail service was suspended, though a practice has been working as soon as every week to maintain the tracks in working order.

Among the technical issues that bedeviled the venture had been lights that would not switched off, escalators that had been too brief and rooms that had been misnumbered. But the most important impediment to the airport opening was severe issues with the automated sprinkler and fireplace security programs.

Mr. Otto stated the issue was that the venture tried to do an excessive amount of, with too many competing calls for.

Now {that a} regional constructing authority has permitted the brand new opening date, the airport will transfer to the subsequent section: having lots of of volunteers apply utilizing it, from curbside to boarding, in a two-month dry run.

On Wednesday, officers at Tegel stated it will briefly halt operations due to the pandemic, though the transfer must be permitted by authorities. It just isn’t clear whether or not Tegel will reopen earlier than Berlin Brandenburg, often known as BER, begins dealing with town’s air journey.

One Berlin newspaper, The Tagesspiegel, has been working an automatic clock counting the times because the failed grand opening of 2012. Wednesday’s rely: 2,888.

In a latest article within the newspaper, Mr. Lütke Daldrup, the airports chief, sounded as if he was keen to maneuver ahead.

“The BER construction site jokes are getting boring now,” he stated. “So everyone can get used to talking about BER as a future airport instead of a permanent construction site.”
