Hamas arrests Gaza activists after Zoom call with Israelis

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) – Hamas-run safety forces have arrested a number of peace activists within the Gaza Strip on treason prices after they took half in an online convention with Israeli activists, officers stated Thursday.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry stated the activists are accused of “holding a normalization activity with the Israeli occupation.”

“Holding any activity or contact with the Israeli occupation under any cover is a crime punishable by law and a betrayal for the people and their sacrifices,” it stated in an announcement.

Hamas, which seized Gaza from rival Palestinian forces in 2007, doesn’t acknowledge Israel and has carried out scores of assaults towards Israelis over the previous few a long time. Israel, the U.S. and the EU view Hamas as a terrorist group.

Hamas has however been holding oblique talks with Israel via Egyptian, Qatari and U.N. mediators for months. The negotiations are aimed toward easing an Israeli and Egyptian blockade imposed on Gaza after Hamas took energy in alternate for calm alongside the frontier.

The activists held an almost two-hour assembly on Monday over Zoom, a web-based conferencing service, discussing problems with widespread curiosity, together with the coronavirus pandemic.

The assembly was marketed on a Facebook occasion web page and a recording was posted on-line by Israeli members, prompting an outpouring of Palestinian incitement towards the Gaza activists on social media.

The household of Rami Aman, the principle organizer, stated he answered a summons from the safety service early Thursday and that they haven’t heard from him since.

Hamas praised the arrests.

“The relationship with the Zionist occupation is only a continuing fight until it is forced out of all Palestinian lands,” spokesman Hazem Qassem stated.
